I have joined the Department of Political Science in 1999. Before being appointed Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Greifswald, I worked as a Research Professor at the Nottingham Trent University (1996-1999). While writing my Habilitation (a German post-doctoral degree), I spent most of my time at the Department of Political Science at the University of Göteborg (1994-1996) with a post doctoral scholarship of the German Research Society (DFG). I received my doctoral degree from the European University Institute in Florence in 1991. My PhD Thesis dealt with “New Politics in Trade Unions” and was supervised by Gøsta Esping-Andersen and Claus Offe. I received my first degree in sociology (M.A.) at the University of Bielefeld in 1985 after I have studied in Duisburg and Edinburgh.

Thanks to the profound influence these stays abroad have had on me, I still maintain contacts with colleagues worldwide. I have taught and done research at several American universities (Los Angeles, New York and Irvine), in Norway (University of Bergen), Australia (Australian National University) and recently in New Zealand (Lincoln University). In addition, I work with colleagues at Åbo Akademi in Finland on a regular basis.

My work is focused on comparative politics. In particular, I concentrate on methodological aspects of comparison as a method. My latest articles on comparative politics deal with conceptual and methodological issues of processes of diffusion and public policy.

Currently, I am working on several research projects on environmental policy in OECD countries and political performance in Central Eastern Europe. These projects are funded by the German Research Society (DFG).
